What is Neuro Ophthalmology?

Neuro ophthalmology service provides a highly specialized care to patients with eye diseases which are related to various neurologic problems. Typical neuro ophthalmology problems include unexplained vision loss, loss of peripheral vision, double vision, abnormal eye movements and disorders of the eye pupil. These abnormalities could be a result of brain tumor, stroke, diabetes, arterial hypertension, multiple sclerosis or other neurologic conditions.

Doctor Albert Smolyar is currently the only fellowship trained neuro ophthalmologist in Louisville and in Kentucky. He completed neuro ophthalmology fellowship training in Michigan in 1999. Doctor Smolyar joined Doctors Eye Institute in 2006 and has been providing Neuro Ophthalmology care to patients of Kentucky and Southern Indiana since. He is also involved in teaching residents at University of Louisville serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor of University of Louisville Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
